Ethical Investing is strongly committed to being a “good corporate citizen” in many practical ways – including volunteering at social or environmental causes. Recently the team helped out at the Kaipatiki Project Ecohub, a North Shore-based environmental initiative.

Built on regenerating native biodiversity, largely on the North Shore of Auckland, Kaipatiki also aims to provide opportunities to learn about environmental sustainability and what we can all do to support sustainable living. They’ve taken the lead on restoring several areas, in particular the lovely Eskdale Bush in Auckland’s Birkdale, removing weeds, growing many different native trees, and planting out.

Tree-planting is a winter activity, so each spring Kaipatiki has a sale of their seedlings that would otherwise need to wait till next season. Our project for the day was helping to move several hundred small trees and shrubs from the nursery to their carpark, ready for purchase that day. We quickly learned to differentiate kauri from kowhai – and also  important barrowing skills! Meanwhile, Steve was carefully snipping the ends off kowhai seeds – this is done to facilite germination, else the kowhai’s hard outer shell would make it a very slow process.
