Ethical Investing NZ at RIAA Conference 2025: Leading the Way in Responsible Advice
Earlier this month, our team had the privilege of contributing to the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) Conference Aotearoa NZ 2025, the largest gathering of ethical and responsible investment professionals in New Zealand. Held at the Aotea Centre in Tāmaki Makaurau, this year’s theme — Te wero o te kōtuku (the lightning strike of the kōtuku) — called us to act with purpose and precision in a rapidly changing world.
Mark Holtom: Helping advisers step confidently into responsible investment
Our very own Mark Holtom led a practical workshop designed to help financial advisers overcome the barriers to entering the responsible investment space. His session focused on:
- Rising client demand, especially from younger investors and those involved in intergenerational wealth transfers
- Tools already available to help advisers match products to client values
- Training options to bridge the knowledge gap
- How to become a Certified Responsible Investment Adviser and stand out in a competitive market
Advisers left with a clear action plan and renewed confidence to integrate responsible investment into their everyday advice.
Peter Lee: Leading values-based conversations with clients
Peter Lee led a panel tackling one of the most common challenges advisers face: how to talk about values when you don’t have all the answers. His panel explored:
- How to set expectations early and manage uncertainty
- Common tough questions clients ask — and how to respond with professionalism and care
- Navigating trade-offs when products don’t fully align with client values
The session was packed with real-life examples and practical strategies to help advisers lead these client conversations with clarity and confidence.
Why This Matters
As the pace of global change accelerates — and ESG faces pushback in some markets — New Zealand’s ethical and responsible investment community continues to lead with focus. The conference showcased our collective commitment to long-term impact, transparency, and meaningful client engagement.
We’re proud to be part of this movement and to help shape the future of ethical advice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
