We’re delighted to share an exciting milestone in the Ethical Investing NZ journey. In early April, Mark Holtom, Melaney Clark, and Francesca Snell will collectively purchase the majority of the business from founder shareholders Peter and Val Lee.
This transition ensures Ethical Investing NZ remains employee‑owned and operated, securing the long‑term continuity of the values, independence, and personal client service that have shaped the firm since 2014.
Why now?
Over recent months, we received several approaches from external companies interested in acquiring Ethical Investing NZ. These offers were flattering and reflected the strong reputation the firm has earned in the ethical advisory space.
But as Mark notes:
“We realised we might lose some of the things that make this firm special — our close client contact, and the freedom to chart our own destiny.”
At the same time, Peter and Val were looking for clarity around their own future. With the team buying into the business, both goals can be achieved: continuity for clients and staff, and a secure, purpose‑aligned succession path.
A founder’s legacy carried forward
Peter founded Ethical Investing NZ in November 2014 with a clear vision:
- great clients
- best‑in‑class portfolios and advice
- and a genuine commitment to ethical investment as a force for good
Reflecting on the upcoming transition, he says:
“Now it’s timely to pass the baton on to a new generation, and it’s especially great to have such a strong and capable team to do just that.”
Peter will remain a shareholder, director, and Chair of the board, continuing to provide guidance behind the scenes and championing the essential role ethical investing plays.
The team’s commitment
Melaney, the newest member of the team, says the transition honours and protects the heart of the business:
“Peter’s built up an amazing firm, and this is the best way we can collectively carry his legacy forward — to be great stewards of his vision.”
Reassurance for our clients
Succession planning is a reality for every boutique advisory firm. Clients may have wondered what that future looks like for us.
This transition provides the strongest reassurance possible: our people, our philosophy, and our commitment to ethical investing remain firmly in place — now with the added strength of majority staff ownership.
We’re excited about this next chapter and grateful to our clients for their trust and support. Here’s to continuing our work together, guided by the values that have always defined Ethical Investing NZ.
